Who works in a BDC, and what each role owns.
Titles vary by dealer group, but the work does not. Here are the roles inside a dealership Business Development Center, what each one is accountable for, and how the mix changes when AI takes the first touch.
Four seats in a BDC.
Answers calls, works leads, books and confirms, follows up, logs the CRM. Measured on set rate, show rate and speed to answer.
Staffs the queue, writes cadences, coaches on calls, reports set, show and sold to the GM and fixed ops director.
Agent schedules, CRM and scheduler hygiene, confirmations, weekly scorecard.
Response speed, lead source performance and CRM routing rules for internet and chat leads.
How the roles change with AI
When AI answers every inbound contact and books the appointment, the representative seat stops being about volume and becomes about judgment: escalations, relationships and promotional outreach. The manager stops staffing a queue and starts managing outcomes on a dashboard. With an AI-only vendor, the store still has to employ those representatives. Alpha Drive AI supplies the representative and coordinator functions through AI and Live Assist, the only dealership AI that does, while the advisors and salespeople who receive the transfers stay exactly where they are. BDC role questions
What does a BDC representative do?
A BDC representative, also called a BDC agent, handles the dealership's inbound calls, internet leads, texts and chats, sets and confirms appointments for Sales or Service, follows up on unsold and declined customers and logs everything in the CRM.
What does a BDC manager do?
Owns the department's numbers: speed to answer, set rate, show rate and sold or RO rate. Builds the follow-up cadences and scripts, staffs for peaks, coaches agents on calls, and reports to the general manager and fixed ops director.
What is a BDC coordinator?
A coordinator role usually supports the manager: scheduling agents, maintaining the CRM and scheduler, pulling reports and handling appointment confirmations. Titles vary by group.
How is a BDC representative paid?
Typically a base plus performance pay tied to appointments set, shown or sold. Structures vary widely by dealership; the best plans pay on outcomes the representative can influence.
Do dealerships still need to hire BDC agents?
Not necessarily. Alpha Drive AI supplies the AI for volume and Live Assist agents for judgment, so a store gets the roles below without recruiting, training or replacing them.
