Phone-up
An inbound sales call from a prospective buyer, as opposed to a walk-in or an internet lead.
Phone-ups are among the highest-intent contacts a dealership receives; the caller has a vehicle in mind and a question. The BDC's job on a phone-up is to answer the question, qualify briefly and set an appointment, not to sell the car on the phone.
In practice
A phone-up is a sales call from a customer asking about a vehicle, a price, trade value or availability. It is one of the highest-intent opportunities a showroom gets, and also one of the most commonly mishandled: the call rings out, or the customer gets a price but no appointment.
Handling it well
The goal of a phone-up is an appointment, with the caller's name and number captured. Answer the question asked, confirm availability, and set a specific time to come in.
Common questions
What is a good phone-up appointment rate?
Many dealerships target well over half of sales phone-ups converted to appointments. Track show rate on those appointments too.
